Knee felt like shit this morning. Throbbing.

Sleep

I still have to sleep with a pillow underneath my knee due to this accident. If I don’t, I can barely walk when I wake up in the morning. Sure, it warms up and gets loose eventually, but it sure is bothersome.

Impairment

When a worker who is receiving Worker’s Compensaton benefits reaches maximum medical improvement, his or her condition is assessed and a degree of permanent or partial impairment is determined. This degree will impact the amount of benefits the worker is able to receive.

I need to start reading up on what this means.

I just found out that my primary care physician graduated from a VETERINARY UNIVERSITY in the freaking WEST INDIES!!!! Okay, to be fair, they have a medical school for humans too.

Last month Doc Campbell released me as MMI. That’s short for maximum medical improvement. That’s not the same as “recovered 100%”. All that it means is that additional PT and doctor’s visits aren’t going to do jack to make my knee any better than time, stretching and exercise will do on their own.

Now that the weather is cold, my knee is alot stiffer than it was while I was rehabbing heavily. Of course, my rehab regimen has also fallen off alot. Who has time for 1.5 hours of daily exercise and stretching with a full time job and other pressing matters?

I am definitely going to start hitting the gym with regularity again though. I may still have a chance at hitting a few snow days late this season and would love to give it a shot.

Oh, in a few months I’ll be rolling around to 1 year post accident. Time flies.

When I talk to my orthopedic surgeon and my insurance claims adjuster, they always ask “how’s your knee doing? does it feel recovered?” I always have a difficult time answering this. In my mind, these are two different issues.

The first part, how’s my knee doing relates to have I recovered from the surgery. The answer to that is no. But I am doing better and I feel like I’m somewhere in the 75% category. Still working on strength and flexibility. I’ve also developed a ligament or tendon pop when I flex the knee joint.

The second part, am I recovered? is a question of whether or not I’ve returned to pre-accident condition. The answer to that is also no. I’m still recovering from the surgery, so I have no real way to gauge my progress towards pre-accident condition.
