Knee felt like shit this morning. Throbbing.
Sleep
I still have to sleep with a pillow underneath my knee due to this accident. If I don’t, I can barely walk when I wake up in the morning. Sure, it warms up and gets loose eventually, but it sure is bothersome.
Impairment
When a worker who is receiving Worker’s Compensaton benefits reaches maximum medical improvement, his or her condition is assessed and a degree of permanent or partial impairment is determined. This degree will impact the amount of benefits the worker is able to receive.
I need to start reading up on what this means.

Last month Doc Campbell released me as MMI. That’s short for maximum medical improvement. That’s not the same as “recovered 100%”. All that it means is that additional PT and doctor’s visits aren’t going to do jack to make my knee any better than time, stretching and exercise will do on their own.
Now that the weather is cold, my knee is alot stiffer than it...

When I talk to my orthopedic surgeon and my insurance claims adjuster, they always ask “how’s your knee doing? does it feel recovered?” I always have a difficult time answering this. In my mind, these are two different issues.
The first part, how’s my knee doing relates to have I recovered from the surgery. The answer to that is no. But I am doing better and I feel like...

more rehab
PT continues twice weekly. Small gains continue. Still working on flexibility and strength. Still unable to kneel on the operated knee. No squatting. In and out of the car still creates some difficulty, as does going downstairs. 9/22 visit with orthopedist. Will likely be put back on limited work duty.
rehab
Seeing small gains daily. Added flexibility, stability, strength.
Walking with flip-flops is an ordeal. 10 minutes of that conjures up some wicked soreness. With regular sneakers, can walk a couple hours or so without any major issues. Still can’t walk downstairs 100%.
Did 30 minutes on the stationary bike, stretched a bit and jogged in place in the pool today. Will do the same minus the...

Oh, yeah, the insomnia is still around.
2nd PT + exercise
Went to my 2nd PT visit today 9/1.
Hamstring and calf stretches
Hamstring and quad excercises
Electrical stim 20 minutes
Visit took about 1:30 due to giant backlog of other patients.
Talked with another dude with the same surgery, but a week advanced (8/1 versus 8/10). He told me that he discontinued the meds (like me a couple days ago) due to unfavorable reactions. He said that he’s...

New meds:

Flexeril as needed.
Discontinued all other medication.
PT
Removed the bandages on 8/25. Wounds healed pretty well. Small incisions visible, no scabbing. Can feel scar tissue forming under the incisions. Some bruising. There is a divot under each incision point, hopefully those will heal up instead of being dents in my knee. Went to PT today 8/26. Completed a range of motion test, right knee measured 125, left knee measured 103. Did some lifting/pivot...
Mobile, Hostile, Agile
Well, I’m completely crutch free, and hobbling around fairly well. I’ve started to test the range of motion on my knee, and it seems to be getting greater daily. This is directly related to the reduced swelling around the sutures and general area. Stairs continue to be a challenge, mainly because I can’t bend my left knee at the joint very well, but walking is doable with some...
insomnia
This is day eleven of my altered sleep pattern. Last night I went to bed at about 12am, and woke up at 330am, unable to get back to sleep. I felt a weird feeling flush across my arms and upper chest and I had to jump out of bed and went to the living room to sit on the couch for a few minutes. I checked my pulse and it was going at about 90bpm. My normal resting pulse is about 70bpm, so it was...
druuuugs are bad
So the hydrocodone has been making me super sick. I’ve opted to not take it. I talked to the doctor’s answering service who said they’d put in a prescription for Vicodin. Apparently what I’ve been taking is Norco. Which is twice the strength as Vicodin. I had no idea there were different types of this medication.
The nabumetone has been giving me crazy stomach aches, even...
Sleep Deprivation Experiment
This recovery period has been an excercise in inadvertent sleep deprivation. I’m have been getting about four to six hours of sleep a night, which reached a crescendo of failure last night, during which I slept for a total of two hours.
I’ve been taking the recommended doses of medication, including Tizanidine which is a muscle relaxer. I thumbed through the side effects of all my...
Rx Continued
Hydrocodone aka Vicodin dulls all senses and produces waves of nausea for four to six hours. Coincidentally, that is the stated duration of the medication. I’m considering forgoing the pain meds to avoid the sensation of motion sickness during all waking hours.
Yes!
I still have the word “yes” written on my leg in purple indelible ink. Prior to surgery, the pre-op nurse explained that everyone I talked to would ask to confirm which knee was the injured knee. I was probably asked that question six or seven times, even after the “yes” was scrawled on my leg. I’m thankful for this kind of redundancy before multiple holes are driven...
Rx
Amoxycillin / Clavul Tab 500/125mg - take 1 tablet by mouth twice a day for the next 3 days after surgery.
Nabumetone Tab 750mg - take 1 tablet by mouth twice a day with food.
Hydrocodone / Apap Tab 10/325mg - take 1 tablet by mouth every 4 - 6 hours as needed for pain.
Tizanidine Tab 4mg - take 1 tablet by mouth at bedtime.
Lots of rest, ice and elevation.

The back of my leg is crusty as hell from the gauze wrap. It’s been on my leg for three straight days. Rug burn anyone?

So who's paying for all this s**t???
I’m on the phone with some idiot at corporate. He’s asking me if I have insurance and that I should run these car repairs through my own policy. Uh…dips**t. This is a work car. This part of the accident is not my problem, it’s YOUR problem.
